Online clipboard: what it is and when to use one
Updated July 2026 ยท 4 min read
Your operating system's clipboard is a single hidden variable in memory: copy something, and it sits there until you paste or copy again. Fine for one device. Useless the moment you want that text on a different machine.
What is an online clipboard?
An online clipboard extends this idea across the internet. You "copy" on one device by sending the content to a small web service. The service holds it under a short code, URL or QR. On the other device you "paste" by fetching that code back.
Why not just email or message yourself?
Chat apps and email work, but they add friction: sign-in, attachment limits, message history you didn't want, and image re-compression. An online clipboard skips all of that.
What to look for
- No account required. The whole point is speed.
- Auto-expiry. Content should self-destruct, not sit forever on a server.
- HTTPS everywhere. Non-negotiable.
- Multiple retrieval options. Code + QR covers all devices.
When to use one
Screenshots between phone and laptop, Wi-Fi passwords for guests, long text you can't type on mobile, invoices you need on your phone before leaving the house. Copy Cloud is built to cover all of these in under 10 seconds.
