Why cables are optional in 2026

Windows 11 has Nearby Share and Phone Link, but both need setup, sign-in and a matching account on each device. When you just want one file across, a browser-only clipboard is faster.

Method 1: Nearby Share

Works if both devices are logged into compatible Google/Microsoft accounts on the same Wi-Fi. Great for repeat use, painful for one-off transfers on a shared PC.

Method 2: Phone Link

Microsoft's Phone Link mirrors your Android to Windows. Excellent for messages, less ideal for pushing a random PDF.

Method 3: Copy Cloud (fastest one-off)

Open copycloud.me on your Android in Chrome. Tap Send, pick the file. Grab the 6-character code. On the Windows PC, open Copy Cloud, tap Retrieve, type the code - the file downloads instantly. Nothing installed, nothing signed into, and the clip auto-deletes in 24 hours.

When to use which

Nearby Share for daily transfers on your own devices. Phone Link for messaging. Copy Cloud for guest PCs, work machines, family laptops or any device you don't want to sign into.
